Wilmington, North Carolina, is a picturesque beach town with a rich connection to water. Officially colonized in the 1720’s by the English along the Cape Fear River, Wilmington grew into a busy port community and became an important strategic region in both Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Evidence of Wilmington’s storied past lingers in the scenic Riverwalk around Cape Fear River, the Battleship North Carolina and the 230-block Historic District. Today, it’s the site of UNC-Wilmington and nicknamed “Wilmywood,” serving as a hub for film and television production. It’s a coastal city flowing with energy and creativity.

USS North Carolina Museum

The Battleship North Carolina, a member of the American fleet commissioned in 1941, participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Currently docked across the river from downtown Wilmington, the Battleship offers students the opportunity to board the deck, step back in time, and imagine the lives of crew members during combat.

North Carolina Aquarium

What’s under the waves? The North Carolina Aquarium is committed to helping visitors make connections with the natural world. Their educational programs allow students to experience interactive learning through exhibits, enhance lessons, and explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through studying sea turtles.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site

Formerly a Confederate fort during the Civil War, Fort Fisher protected the trading routes of Wilmington’s port. It was also the site of the largest land and water battle during the Civil War! The Visitors Center includes a video, exhibits, and artifacts from sunken ships and students enjoy walking the trail around the fort remains.

State Ferry on Cape Fear River

Board the ferry for a relaxing ride across the Cape Fear River. As pelicans and sea gulls swoop alongside the boat, this fun trip offers beautiful views of the coastline, fresh air, and a speedier route to islands across the river.

Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park

Nicknamed the “best water park in Eastern NC,” this playful attraction is one stop shopping for a day of family fun. The park is divided into two sections. It’s got a water park, which includes slides for all ages, the Lazy River and wave-pool, and a “dry park,” offering an arcade, mini bowling, go karts, golf, laser tag, rock climbing and more!
