The Great Smoky Mountains get their name from the blue-like smoky mist that surrounds them, making a picturesque backdrop for Pigeon Forge. In the Smoky Mountains you’ll discover 500,000 acres of Southern Appalachian wilderness on one of the oldest uplands on earth! The mountains are 95-percent forest, so the fall colors are spectacular during the second half of October. The scenery combined with two unique shows, great shopping, wonderful meals and even a train ride make this fall getaway hard to forget.

Departing Tennessee after breakfast, we head to Bryson City, North Carolina. Here we join the 9 a.m. Nantahala River Gorge Excursion onboard the Great Smoky Mountain Train. This 2 ½ hour one-way train ride travels 44 miles to the scenic Nantahala River Gorge, crosses Fontana Lake on a 100-foot-high Trestle Bridge that spans almost 800 feet across the Lake, and then winds through the scenic western North Carolina mountains into the Gorge. Your coach will be waiting at the other end to whisk you back to Bryson City for free time to shop and have lunch. Rejoin the coach for our trip home. B
