Come up for fresh air in the iconic city of Asheville, North Carolina. This thriving mountain city features an electric and funky artistically infused downtown area that features a variety of culinary wonders and live music. Aside from its historic and architecturally diverse downtown scene, Asheville is the ultimate playground with a wide variety of outdoor adventures and serves as an ideal territory for any type of explorer. It is the home of the astonishing Biltmore estate nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and is home to hundreds of brilliant artists that display their art through out the city.
The luxurious family home of George and Edith Vanderbilt is a marvel of elegance and charm, as magnificent today as it was more than a century ago. The house visit spans three floors and the basement. Students will see displays of vintage clothing, accessories, art, furniture, and more that tell stories and illustrate the lives of the Vanderbilt family, their guests, and employees.
Start your Columbia tour with a visit to the South Carolina State Museum. The museum is the fundamental introduction to South Carolina history, art, technology and culture. Housed in the historic 1893 Columbia Mill textile building, the South Carolina State Museum tells the history of South Carolina through our many traveling museum exhibits, permanent collections and educational programs. Come and enjoy South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science and technology. Many of the museum’s displays are interconnected. You will find there is history in our art, artistic beauty in our natural history and science, and history behind our technology. All disciplines are also represented by objects in the hands-on Stringer Discovery Center. Although no museum can display its entire collection, we offer a varied sampling of the wonders found both within our state and around the world.
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the nation’s most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens. The lush 170-acre site features dynamic natural habitat exhibits, scenic river views, spectacular valley overlooks and significant historic landmarks. All programs are carefully crafted and designed to involve your students in active student center learning.
Students get a better idea of how the South Carolina Legislature works and how they can be involved. They will learn what Representatives and Senators do and how they go about making laws.
The Joint Legislative Conference Room or The Library is one of the most beautiful rooms in the State House. The twin staircases and columns were originally installed in 1889. The massive chandelier was originally gas lit and is the only remaining original State House chandelier. The beauty of the library is enhanced by the Tennessee pediment door, the mosaic glass windows and the original mahogany doors.
